The tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica), also known as Indian date or sour date, is the only species of the plant genus Tamarindus in the subfamily of carob plants (Caesalpinioideae) within the legume family (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). It is widespread in Africa and adjacent areas. The bright, beautifully structured zebra tamarind wood is the sapwood of the tamarind tree, which is much lighter and softer than the heartwood. The structures are created by a complex, time-consuming fermentation process.
