Another interpretation is the allocation to the eight "tongues" of the Maltese Fraternity: Provence, Auvergne, France, Italy, Aragon, England, Germany and Castile.
The four tips showing inwards are associated with the four cardinal virtues: intelligence, justice, bravery and moderation.

BDSM stands for a wide variety of practices and expressions that can be both erotic or non-erotic in nature, which involves extreme body modification, animal players (sodomie), latex or rubber lovers, restraint, role-play, sensory stimulation as well as numerous interpersonal activities. BDSM is connected with practices such as bondage and discipline (B&D or BD), dominance and submission (D&S or D/S) and sadomasochism or sadism and masochism (S&M or S/M).

BDSM TRISKEL: The official BDSM symbol derives from the ancient triskel symbol used by different cultures throughout history. The BDSM Triskel is a three-division that follows a clockwise rotation and where both black and silver colors are used. The tripartite division symbolizes as well the three consistent game modes in BDSM. B&D (Bondage and Discipline), D&S (Dominance and Submission) and S&M (Sadism and Masochism). In addition it represents the three BDSMers principles: safety (Safe), health (Sane), mutual consent (Consensual) and also the three roles that take part in BDSM: Active (Tops), Passive (Bottoms), and fickle (Switchers).

MEANING:
The skull is a widely known symbol of Vanitas and "Memento Mori" which goes to show the bodys limited time on earth and it's inevitable turn to dust. The skull, domicile of the brain, is perceived in many cultures as the vessel of the spirit and the soul and thus as the source for thought and life. Skulls were amongst other things used in alchemy for conversion processes. Vanitas symbols - mostly with moralizing intent - are supoposed to remind of perishability of life and of material goods. Another one of their themes is the escape of everything lively from violent interference. The term "Memento Mori" originated in latin and means literally "Remember to die" (means -that you will have to die). In use is also "Memento Mortis" ("Remember death"). The exhortation "Memento Mori" was already used in the antiquity. A slave in ancient rome would stand behind his successful (in battle) master, who was given a victory parade, holding a laurel wreath and the Jupiter temple crown above his head reminding him without pause of the following:

  • Memento mori: Remember that you will have to die!
  • Memento te hominem esse: Remember that you are human.
  • Respice post te, hominem te esse memento: Look around - think, that you are only human.
